FROM THE CHAIR - 11/17

Dear Friends in Recovery,

As we come up on elections for the new 2018 Northern Virginia Intergroup Board, I ask that you please consider running for one of the positions. I cannot begin to tell you how much it has meant to me to serve on the Board and to expand my service for OA. I have learned so much by watching others before me. I have done it very imperfectly and I have learned that is enough--just to give what I can. It has been humbling and deeply gratifying, even, and perhaps especially, when it has been challenging. I have been given so many opportunities to lean into my growing edge, and I am grateful for all that I have learned and will continue to learn through this program of recovery.

I want to share with you my thoughts after my most recent experience at the Region 7 Fall Assembly.

When I first served as an alternate rep for the Northern Virginia Intergroup back in the spring of 2016, I said I'd do it because that's how I have been raised in program--say yes to service whenever you can. I was certain it was going to be a joyless weekend stuck in a stuffy hotel conference room. But I was so wrong! I bumbled along with the help of my "green dot" mentor who showed me the ropes. I saw recovery in action on all three levels, and by the end of that weekend I couldn't wait to come back. It had never been my desire to participate in service beyond the Intergroup level. But then again, when I showed up at my first OA meeting I had pre-conceived notions about OA and I was wrong about that too.

What do we do at Assembly? We conduct business, we share recovery, we laugh and we exchange ideas. All of this so that we can better fulfill our primary purpose which is to carry the message back to our Intergroups, to our meetings and to our members that there is recovery from compulsive eating and eating behaviors--there is a solution!

Each time I attend Assembly I am moved by the dedication to recovery and service in action that I see all around me. And now I have been given the opportunity to serve as the appointed Region 7 Corresponding Secretary until the spring Assembly. I look forward to learning more and to giving what I can to this amazing program which gives me life on a daily basis.

Remember, together we get better!
Jess W.
